Montreal 2023 Rent Strike, Why and How

Anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info

To pledge to join the strike, fill out this quick form. 5,000 pledges are needed. More information, including sample letters, graphics, pdfs, and events, will be posted here. To support the strike, hang a banner from your balcony. An upcoming event, a BBQ at Parc Lafontaine (corner of Panet/Sherbrooke), 12pm, this Saturday (Aug 19) will go over the following points in detail. For questions about the strike, email slam.matu@protonmail.com.

On August, 2nd the Montreal Autonomous Tenants’ Union released a call for a rent strike across the city. The strike is against the government’s new Bill 31, against rent hikes, and for housing for all. The call included a pledge form with a required 5,000 pledges from tenants across the city to join the strike before the strike could officially begin.

To some, a call for a rent strike of 5,000 tenants across Montreal may seem ambitious and risky. The purpose of this text is to respond to legal and political concerns. We hope that this text helps supporters and likely allies better understand the strike and find ways to help.

Guerrilla Ambush against the Police in Philippines

Guerrilla fighters of the New People’s Army set up an ambush in which a corporal from the Calatrava police station was killed and two other policemen, a captain and a corporal, were wounded. The ambush, triggered by an IED explosion as a vehicle carrying ten police officers passed, was set up on August 9 in Barangay Minapasok, Negros Occidental.

The guerrillas recovered four assault rifles, a.45-caliber pistol before stopping. The guerrillas also shot dead two police informers. They had served as guides in combat operations and ensured the reconnaissance of suspected NPA encampments, as well as the monitoring of civilians arbitrarily accused of being members or sympathizers of the guerrilla insurgency.

Law Enforcement Admits to Placing GPS Trackers on Michigan Activist’s Car

Report on law enforcement being caught placing GPS trackers on an activist’s car in so-called Michigan. For more information and photos, go here.

On Monday August 1st, Michigan activist Peatmoss found 2 GPS tracking devises attached with powerful magnets to the rear axle of their car, see pictures here. This happened after Peatmoss spent a week hanging out with friends at the Camp Gayling Week of Action against the Camp Grayling national guard base.

A lawyer calling the police on Peatmoss’s behalf relayed that the police confirmed the trackers were placed by law enforcement, though they refused to name the agency.

Hamburg, Germany: For Nahel and all the others. Private car of cop set on fire

A reformist view of the police as an organ of power is not only naive but also dangerous. Continuous killings by the pigs in uniform are proof that neither internal anti-racist programs nor public debate are able to keep the trigger-happy monsters in check and prevent the next murder. When we hear about the execution of a 19 year old who was riddled with 34 bullets by several cops and miraculously survived paraplegic, our hatred once again rises to immeasurable levels and we have to do something.

Let them be afraid on their patrols through the neighborhoods of the marginalized. They should be afraid at their desks when they arrogantly look at the human filth outside their windows. They are supposed to be afraid when they lie in their little beds at night dreaming of action against evil.

Ten Comrades Arrested in Police Operation Against Anarchist Newspaper in Italy

On August 8, at dawn, the public prosecutor’s office of Genoa and the Digos (antiterrorist police) of La Spezia led yet another operation of repression against the anarchist movement. Ten anarchist comrades are accused in this investigation, including five comrades from Carrara, for whom the prosecutor initially asked for detention. In addition to searches in the homes, the Anarchist Cultural Circle “Gogliardo Fiaschi”, the historic center of anarchists in Carrara, has been the subject of a descent. Magazines, books, leaflets, posters and computer supplies have been seized. The preliminary investigation judge has decided on four residential assignments with all restrictions, five house arrests with return to prison at night. One comrade is not subject to any restriction. Luigi, one of the four residential comrades had no official residence: he was therefore transferred to the Spezia prison.

The comrades are accused of subversive association for purposes of terrorism (art. 270 bis of the penal code) and incentive to commit a crime (article 424 of the penal code) aggravated by the objective of terrorism, with regard to the publication, dissemination and use of information on terrorism, in connection with the publication, from 2020, of the internationalist bimonthly anarchist “Bezmotivny”, as well as to attack on the honor and prestige of the President of the Republic, and clandestine printing. To write to Luigi: Luigi Palli / Casa Circondariale di la Spezia / Piazza G. Falcone e P. Borsllino n. 1/19125 La Spezia (SP) / Italy

Chile: Arson attack on Red bus in Estación Central in solidarity with political prisoners

In the early morning of Monday, July 31, a group of people who boarded as passengers, intimidated the driver, got off the other passengers and sprayed benzine to set fire to a Red bus on Las Rejas Avenue, next to Lo Errazuriz Park.

According to the Minister of Transportation Juan Carlos Muñozs, “this is a matter of investigation, however, preliminary information indicates that it is likely to have been intentional. Of course, we find this much more than regrettable, it is condemnable”.

Munich (Germany): one relay antenna less

Munich , one relay antenna less

Around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday night, July 16, a relay antenna was set on fire in Forstenrieder Park, near the town of Pullach (a southern suburb of Munich). It was at this time that the cell phone operator lost all signal, before sending a team to the site the following day at around 1pm (a Sunday), who could only observe that its installation had been burnt down during the night before the fire extinguished itself, without however completely destroying the tower.

The authorities, for their part, obviously do not presume a technical fault – the familiar police theory of the self-combustion of relay antennas is now a bit forced – but rather a “crime affecting State Security”, leading them to entrust the investigation to the K43 police station (“far-left political criminality”).

All the more so since another telephone antenna went up in smoke at the beginning of June in the east of the city, and an intensification of attacks seems to have been taking place in Munich over the last few months, ranging from fiber optics to data cables along bridges, and including the burning of electric cars (municipally owned, or not) and luxury cars (two BMW X5s up in smoke at a dealership on Landsberger Straße on July 10, as part of the Switch off the system campaign).
