Barcelona: Mass resistance to eviction at Casa Orsola

~ Blade Runner ~The planned eviction of tenants at Casa Orsola was temporarily halted this weekend after large-scale resistance by housing groups, residents, and local supporters. The judicial committee responsible for executing the eviction arrived at the site on Saturday but ultimately left without enforcing the order, citing the overwhelming presence of protesters and media. However, a new eviction date has already been announced for tomorrow morning (4 February) at 5am.

Over the past year, tenants and supporters have resisted multiple eviction attempts at Casa Orsola, organising community mobilisations, legal battles, and direct action to protect residents from displacement. The latest eviction order targeted five flats, but the broader objective of the investment firm is to clear the entire building.

The 27-unit residential building in Esquerra de l’Eixample neighbourhood has become a focal point in the fight against gentrification and mass evictions. In 2021, a real estate investment firm purchased the building, seeking to evict long-term tenants in order to convert the apartments into high-priced, short-term tourist rentals—a trend that has transformed the city’s housing market and displaced thousands of local residents in recent years.

By early morning, hundreds of people had gathered to block the eviction, forming human barricades and occupying the building. The crowd included not only experienced activists and housing organisers but many ordinary residents. Tenants and supporters live-streamed the situation from inside and outside the building, and media coverage intensified.

The Sindicat de Llogateres, Barcelona’s leading tenants’ union, has been at the forefront of the fight to defend the residents, combining the tactics of the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH)—a grassroots movement against mortgage evictions—with methods rooted in anarcho-syndicalism. The residents and union have called for live-streamed resistance to continue this morning, with defensive organising to mobilise supporters before tomorrow’s 5am deadline, and community activities such as performances, discussions and food sharing through the night.

A decade of resistance

The defence of Casa Orsola is part of a long history of housing struggles in Spain. Resistance against gentrification and speculative real estate development has repeatedly flared up in Barcelona and across the country, at times erupting into major uprisings.

In the Burgos uprising of 2014, residents of the working-class neighbour of Gamonal fought against a government-backed plan to gentrify their district by constructing a high-end boulevard. When police cracked down on protests, the neighbourhood erupted in four nights of rioting, during which residents destroyed banks, fought police, and blockaded the construction site. The local government ultimately cancelled the gentrification project. In the same year, Barcelona witnessed the Can Vies revolt, when a 17-year-old squatted social centre was forcibly evicted by police. What began as a protest quickly escalated into a week-long urban revolt involving tens of thousands of people. Police stations were attacked, barricades were erected, and banks were smashed as demonstrators forced authorities to abandon their plans.

The revolt and its decisive victory also spread radical critiques of urban planning, mass tourism, and housing speculation, further fuelling anti-gentrification movements in Spain and internationally.

With Barcelona increasingly resembling a “tourist circus” rather than a livable city for locals, many people—regardless of their previous involvement in social struggles and direct action—are joining efforts to resist corporate-driven evictions. This growing frustration has been nurtured by years of grassroots organising by groups like the PAH, the Sindicat de Llogateres, as well as local neighbourhood groups, which have built strong networks of solidarity and direct action.

Santiago, Chile: Barricades in memory of the compañeros Lupi, Tortuga, Belén and Risue.

Encapuchados (hooded ones) raised barricades, while at the same time there were demonstrations for the forced disappearance of Julia Chuñil and her dog Cholito. Facts that should not leave anyone indifferent and that show us -once again- that the Power and its accomplices can carry out this type of acts against those who become a nuisance, a threat to their interests.

A banner was left at the site in memory of the recently deceased comrades Lupi, Tortuga, Belén and Risue.

Six Joyriders Steal an R Train

New York City police are searching for a group of people they say took a subway train on a joyride.\

The department released images and video Wednesday of six individuals who they say commandeered an unoccupied “R” train over the weekend.

Surveillance video from inside the train shows the group, who all wore jackets with their hoods up, as they exited the conductor’s compartment and walked through the otherwise empty car.

A video of the group on their joyride was also shared on Instagram.

The clip shows one of them seated at the controls while another appears to be sitting on the outside of the car, their legs dangling over the edge.

“Cover your faces. Cover your faces,” one of them says on the video as the train accelerates through the tunnel.

The department said Thursday that they believe the joyride occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday at the 36th Street and 4th Avenue Subway Station in Brooklyn.

Police and transit officials have not said how long and how far the suspects travelled in the stolen train. They said the suspects damaged glass panels on the train’s camera.

The group fled on foot, according to police. No injuries were reported.

Spokespersons for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said they are working with police on the investigation.

Police in September said two teens took an empty subway train in Queens on a brief joyride before crashing it and fleeing.

Ding Dong Ditch

Alex Boyko is a serial rapist. He has sexually assaulted and harassed 200 people. Many are women and femmes who he was tattooing. He’s boasted about his assaults and he continues to run a tattoo shop at 28913 W. Seven Mile Road in Livonia. The courts will never give us justice but direct action is always at our fingertips. Cis men need to step up and make it a responsibility to deplatform rapists. Pay him a visit, cover your face so you’re not on camera, break his store, put him out of business. Ding dong, asshole, we’ll keep waking you up. You can’t hide from what you did.

FIRE TO THE PUMPS! FROM SÜNDI ( Hambach,Germany)

FIRE TO THE PUMPS! FROM SÜNDI

4 pumping stations for the Hambach Mine around Sündi were destroyed during the night of the 13th, 3 of which by fire, causing RWE to shut down the pumps in the area the next day. This is was following a failed attempt by security early in the day to erect some signs, which led to physical confrontations, barricading and a standoff.

After which some uncontrollables took a night walk with tools and gasoline. Any pump that stood closer to Hambi has been out of action for some time.

The Sündi is growing despite the imminent eviction threat, to clarify the Sündi is a small section of forest squatted since last September, that was once part of the nearby (and still squatted!) Hambacher forest.

We are calling on people to come help defend Sündi and make some trouble! The eviction can happen any day and whilst Hambi is not under direct threat, we are ready for the possibility of cops trying to enter as well. As proven by the slashing of tires of a briefly unattended state work vehicle in front of a barricade last week. If you can come bring a tent and warm stuff and if not spread the word or make some solidarity mischief!

As always, the flame keeps us warm despite the ice.

Incendiary greetings to Pola and Nikos!

Death to order and progress!

Up the wild ones!!!

In the early hours of 30.21.24, we visited the Greek residence in Bern. (Switzerland)

In the early hours of 30.21.24, we visited the Greek residence in Bern.

On October 31 of this year, an explosive device detonated in an apartment in Athens. It killed fellow anarchist Kyrikaos Xymitiris. Fellow anarchist Marianna, who was also in the apartment, was seriously injured in the explosion. Despite her serious injuries, she is currently in prison in Korydallos without adequate medical care (see more at: https://de.indymedia.org/node/478444).

In addition to Marianna, Dimitra, Dimitris, Nikos and A.K are in custody in connection with these events. They are all accused of the same thing: Founding and membership of a terrorist organization, possession and manufacture of explosives, and damage to private property.

We stand in solidarity with all those affected by the repression and have decided to contribute to the action days from 30.12. – 01.01.: In memory of Kyriakos X and in solidarity with those persecuted in the Ampelokipoi trial (see more: https://barrikade.info/article/6800).

For this reason, we visited the Greek residence at Jungfraustrasse 3 in Bern and marked it with paint. This residence serves as the home of Greek diplomats and ambassadors in Bern.
The Greek state, which imprisons those who fight against the prevailing order, also has its henchmen in Switzerland. These people have names and addresses.

Kyriakos unforgotten!

Freedom for the five detainees!

Freedom for all prisoners!

Rojava: Civilians defy Turkish bombing to defend Tishrin dam

Rojava: Civilians defy Turkish bombing to defend Tishrin dam

Despite deadly airstrikes and international silence, hundreds are risking their lives to protect a vital infrastructure

~ Blade Runner ~

Over the past two weeks, thousands of civilians in northeastern Syria have been carrying out a human shield operation at Tishrin dam, enduring drone attacks that have killed over ten civilians and injured dozens, including journalists documenting the atrocities. The vigils come in response to increased attacks by Turkish drones and warplanes, and have been bolstered by convoys of hundreds from across northern Syria.

The Tishrin Dam is a key provider of water and electricity to Rojava that connects the strategic city of Manbij to surrounding regions via the Euphrates crossings, including the Qara Qozak bridge. In December, the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) launched operations in Manbij, briefly seizing control. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) countered, reclaiming villages and repelling attempts to disrupt critical supply lines.

SNA offensives—backed by Turkish artillery and air strikes by drones and fighter jets—have been ultimately threatening with a wider invasion to take Kobane, a historic centre of resistance against ISIS. This offensive has been looming despite US deterrence and has the potential to escalate into one of the most brutal wars in the area since the days of ISIS.

The battered but standing dam has become a symbol of resistance for the Rojava communities. If the dam collapses, the floodwaters could release over 2 billion cubic meters of water, devastating countless villages, farmland, and lives downstream.

The vigils have prompted international expressions of solidarity. Activists blocked flights at Milan Malpensa Airport to protest Turkish airstrikes, while support actions have taken place in cities such as Bern, Hamburg and Paris.

As drone strikes intensify and an invasion looms, grassroots action and international solidarity may prove to be crucial to deter another state-led ethnic cleansing in the tormented region.
